Why register for GST and QST?

Who is concerned by GST and QST registration?

All persons engaged in a paid commercial activity must register for the GST and QST with Revenu Québec. There are situations in which you are obliged to comply with this administrative formality. These are companies with the status of small supplier:

  • If the total of your taxable supplies and services exceeds $30,000 in a calendar quarter or for all four quarters of the previous one;
  • If you have a taxi or limousine service;
  • If you charge public admission fees for events that take place in Quebec (even if you don't live there).

However, if you carry on one of the following activities in Québec, you must register for the QST and collect the tax, regardless of the amount of your sales (even if the total is less than $30,000):

  • Sale of tobacco products,
  • Fuel sales,
  • Sale of alcoholic beverages,
  • Sale or rental of road vehicles for a period of more than 12 months,
  • Sale or rental of new tyres.

When should I register for GST and QST?

The deadline to register is different depending on whether you want to register for GST or QST.

  • Registering for the QST: For the QST, the business must register before providing your first taxable service in Quebec. In this case, he must also collect this fee as soon as he registers or from the moment he was supposed to register.
  • Registering for GST: For the GST, the corporation must apply for it before the 30th day after the day on which it invoiced its first taxable service in Canada. The collection of GST is applicable at the time of registration or at the time it was supposed to be registered.

What information is required when registering?

To register for the GST and QST for Revenu Québec, you will need to provide the following information and documents:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN);
  • Quebec enterprise number from the Registraire des entreprises (if applicable);
  • Canada Revenue Agency Business Number (if applicable);
  • Operating name of the business (if applicable);
  • Principal business activity of the business and secondary activities (if applicable);
  • Start date of the company's activities;
  • Total taxable sales that the business intends to make in Canada in the next 12 months;
  • Home address and telephone number;
  • Business address and telephone number;
  • Correspondence address.

You can also apply for a third party without prior power of attorney.

You will also be required to provide, in addition to the information and documents listed above, the following personal information:

  • Name and surname;
  • Date of birth;
  • The last three digits of your Social Insurance Number.
