Who needs to register for GST and QST?

All persons engaged in a remunerated commercial activity must register for GST and QST with Revenu Québec. There are certain situations in which you are obliged to comply with this administrative formality. These include companies with small supplier status:

  • If your total taxable supplies and services exceed $30,000 in a calendar quarter or over the four preceding quarters;
  • If you have a cab or limousine service;
  • If you charge admission to the public for events taking place in Quebec (even if you don't live there).

However, if you carry on any of the following activities in Quebec, you must register for QST and collect the tax, regardless of the amount of your sales (even if the total is under $30,000):

  • Sale of tobacco products,
  • Fuel sales,
  • Sale of alcoholic beverages,
  • Sale or rental of road vehicles for a period of more than 12 months,
  • Sale or rental of new tires.

When should I register for GST and QST?

The deadline for registration depends on whether you wish to register for GST or QST.

  • Register for QST: For QST, your company must register before providing your first taxable service in Quebec. In this case, it must also collect this tax as soon as it registers, or as soon as it was supposed to register.
  • GST registration: For GST, the company must apply before the 30th day following the day on which it invoiced its first taxable service in Canada. GST is applicable from the time of registration or when it was supposed to be registered.

What information do I need to register?

To register for GST and QST with Revenu Québec, you will need to provide the following information and documents:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN);
  • Quebec business number from the Registraire des entreprises (if applicable);
  • Canada Revenue Agency business number (if applicable);
  • Company trade name (if applicable);
  • Company's main business activity and secondary activities (if any);
  • Start date of company activities;
  • Total taxable sales planned in Canada over the next 12 months;
  • Home address and telephone number;
  • Company address and telephone number;
  • Correspondence address.

You can also apply on behalf of a third party, without prior power of attorney.

In addition to the information and documents listed above, you will also need to provide the following personal information:

  • Full name;
  • Date of birth;
  • Last three digits of your social insurance number.
